Understanding Thames Valley Communications Cable Modem Speed Packages

Testing of the TVC speed packages is best done through an Ethernet or a direct connection between the computer and the modem.  This type of connection provides a Full-Duplex connection, this means the modem and computer can send and receive data at the same time, thus providing the best throughput.  When testing use the TVC speed test server, http://fish.tvcconnect.net, will enable customer to test within the TVC network.  TVC’s advertised speeds are up to what the package states.  Once a customer uses Speakeasy.net or speedtest.net the customer leaves our network and is on the public internet.

Wireless connections are a half-duplex connection, this means that either the modem or the computer can only send or receive at any one time, they cannot do both like a wired connection.  With this said the connection speeds will be down.  Another limiting factor to wireless speeds is the type of radio the device has.  For example a PC, tablet or other device that has an 802.11g radio will have slower speeds than a device that is 802.11n.  In a wireless network that has both 802.11g and 802.11n, the network will only go as fast as the slowest device..
